Grade 2 Titanium is the most widely used commercially pure titanium grade, offering an optimal balance of strength, corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. With density 4.51 g/cm³ (60% of steel), it combines light weight with excellent resistance to seawater, chlorides, and oxidizing acids. This grade is specified for chemical processing equipment, marine components, desalination plants, and medical devices where reliability and fabricability are essential .
1. Product Specifications & Physical Data
ZYTC Alloy supplies UNS R50400 in comprehensive mill forms for industrial, marine, aerospace, and medical applications requiring verified mechanical properties and complete material traceability.
Available Forms: Bar, fittings, flanges, forgings, pipe, plate, sheet, strip, tube, welding wire, and wire .
Grade 2 titanium offers excellent fabricability with proper techniques, though its reactive nature requires specific handling.
Annealing: 650-760°C (1200-1400°F) × 10-30 minutes, air cool; full softening after cold work .
Stress Relieving: 482°C (900°F) × 45 minutes, air cool; relieves cold work stresses without softening .
Hot Working: 843-899°C (1550-1650°F); avoid overheating above beta transus (913°C) to prevent grain growth .
Cold Working: Similar to tempered austenitic stainless steel; work-hardening rate moderate. Post-work annealing recommended to restore corrosion resistance and ductility .
Machining: Similar to stainless steel but requires sharp tools, positive rake angles, high cutting speeds, low feed rates, and generous coolant flow. Galling tendency requires proper tool geometry .
Welding: Must be shielded with inert gas (argon or helium) to prevent oxygen/nitrogen contamination. GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) with matching filler metal (ERTi-2) recommended .
Material Comparison:
vs. Grade 1 Titanium: Higher strength (345 MPa vs. 170 MPa yield) with slightly lower ductility; most commonly specified CP grade .
vs. Grade 3 Titanium: Lower strength than Grade 3 (345 MPa vs. 380 MPa yield); Grade 2 offers better formability for most applications .
vs. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V): Significantly lower strength (345 MPa vs. 830 MPa yield); Grade 2 selected where corrosion resistance and formability are primary, strength secondary .
vs. 316L Stainless: Half the density, superior corrosion resistance in chlorides; immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking .
3. Applications
Marine: Navy ship components, offshore hydrocarbon production/drilling equipment, seawater piping systems
Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, reactor vessels, piping systems, pumps, valves, cell parts (anodes/cathodes)
